Emergency Shelter

Milestone operates Southern Maine’s only specialized substance use disorder emergency shelter. The 36-bed overnight shelter for men provides individuals with a safe place to sleep, nutritious meals, clean clothes, showers and counseling while being treated with dignity. In addition to providing a safety net to our community’s most vulnerable individuals struggling with alcohol or other substances, shelter staff help shelter clients find other forms of help, like our own Detox program.

HOME Team

The Homeless Outreach and Mobile Engagement (HOME) Team provides outreach and community supports to those with chronic health, mental health and substance use disorders living on the streets of Portland. Services include daily outreach, mobile health care, intervention, referral, and transportation. The HOME Team reports more than 17,000 contacts with homeless individuals each year, resulting in 3,000 transports to shelters, substance use treatment programs, emergency medical care.

Housing Navigator Program

The primary role of the Housing Navigator Program is to provide Milestone’s clients with the necessary resources to transition out of homelessness and into stable, permanent housing. The program offers client advocacy, case management, benefit establishment, linkage to mental health and substance use services, linkage to stable housing and all other supportive services needed. Since the program’s founding in 2016, it has helped more than 100 chronically homeless individuals find permanent housing.

Detoxification Program

Milestone’s detoxification program offers Maine residents of any gender a safe, medically-supervised transition through the acute stages of withdrawal from alcohol, opioids, or other addictive substances. A 24-hour nursing staff and supervising physician provide medical care to manage symptoms and help with the transition.

During the course of the program, which typically lasts 3 to 7 days, clients also meet with substance use counselors, who provide individual and group counseling and help clients to identify and secure resources and supports for their next stage of care after Milestone. Peer Navigators, themselves people in long-term recovery, work with clients both at Milestone and in the community to help ensure a successful transition.

To inquire about program availability, contact the nursing department at (207)775-4790 and select option 2. Staff is available 24 hours a day, but the line can be busy; if you do not reach a staff member immediately, please try back.

Extended Care

Residential Treatment

Transitional Housing
Milestone’s ¾-way house provides more independent housing to graduates of the Residential Treatment Program as they prepare for their transition to the community. Residents continue to work with counselors, attend targeted Milestone groups and work on their treatment plans.
